British woman, 50, 'found hanged in toilets of Istanbul airport after missing connecting flight to Iraq'
- Jacqueline Anne Sutton had travelled from London Heathrow to Istanbul
- But she is believed to have failed to make it on next flight to Erbil in Iraq
- Appeared distressed after being told to buy new ticket, local media say
- Institute for War and Peace Reporting's acting Iraq director found later
A British woman has been found hanged in a Turkish airport after missing her connecting flight to Iraq, it was claimed last night.
Former BBC journalist Jacky Sutton, 50, had travelled from London Heathrow to Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, but is believed to have failed to make it onto her next plane to Erbil.
She then appeared distressed after being told by airline staff that she would have to buy a new ticket - and was later found in the toilets by three Russian passengers, according to local media.
Ms Sutton had arrived in Istanbul on Turkish Airlines flight TK-1986 at about 10pm local time on Saturday night, and was then due to fly to Erbil at about midnight, it was reported.
She is believed to have been the acting Iraq director for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, an organisation that supports journalists and activists in conflict-hit countries.
Ms Sutton is said to have been born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, but recently lived in a £145,000 two-bedroom flat in Acton, west London.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms Sutton - who studied at Strathclyde and Warwick universities - also worked for the United Nations and was a producer and broadcaster for BBC World between 1998 and 2000.
I think that by placing this story on the main page of the Daily News Website as well as, clearly stating in the title "British Woman", "Istanbul" and flight to "Iraq" will straight away create a sense of controversy within the readers. The fact that the title emphasises the three point will also make the audience see the story as much more dramatic and serious as it will trigger the stereotypes in their mind about Islamic countries. Moreover, it will lead them into thinking about the recent issues that have been raised about those particular areas and so will make them create an even more negative view about the Islamic countries and muslim people.
