“THIS GIRL CAN”

This commercial is used as a campaign created in order to promote a healthy lifestyle for women.

The campaign unlike many, uses a positive representation of women by showing females who do not have the “model figure” which, the media wants everyone to think is perfect and sends out a clear message that we should all be proud of what we look like and who we are.

As for the audio, the advert uses mostly non-diegetic sounds, more precisely a popular song “Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliot. The use of this soundtrack makes the advert much more attracting and catchy and so will make sure to stay in the viewers mind as they will be able to straight away think of it when they hear the song on the radio.
In addition, the advert makes a very minimal use of diegetic sounds, by only using a 1-3 second pause in the soundtrack in order to make the video much more interesting by including the sound of people breathing and/or walking.

Moreover, for the visual technical codes, the advert uses a variety of different camera shots such as a long shot to show a woman running, mid shots used at the beginning of the video to show a woman walking as well as close ups to show how tired the character is. Additionally, a wide range of editing techniques such as slow motion and change of lighting to make the whole concept much more professional.

All of the technical codes, which have been used by the editors of the clip, help to make the whole campaign much more appealing and interesting for the audience to watch. Also, the idea of the whole video following a “catchy” storyline makes sure that it will stay in the mind of those who watched it and so will be able to send out the message which, it carries to them much better, making sure that they will be able to remember it.

TV COMMERCIALS

SNICKERS AND MR BEAN

There is a number of visual technical codes in this TV commercial which, help to catch the audience’s attention from the very beginning. These technical codes include a dark setting, which mostly uses a long shot in order to show the occurring scene.
This causes the commercial to seem as if it follows a storyline and so makes the audience much more interested in it and creates a sense of curiosity in them. In addition, the use of a dark background also helps to create a mysterious atmosphere, making people eager to find out what else will happen. Furthermore, the advert also uses the appearance of Mr Bean who is a very famous character and so, furthermore, helps to attract more audience into watching the commercial, also meaning that it might persuade more people into buying the actual product. Moreover, the use of the dark setting, as well as the change of the audio from quiet and calm into much louder with a noise easily associated with a fight can also reinforce the famous snickers slogan “You are not you when you're hungry” and lead the audience into believing that eating a snickers creates a much more confident, strong and open person within you.
Here we can see the famous phrase used in many Snickers Commercials that can be therefore, clearly identified with this product

Mother-of-five faces jail because her son did not attend lessons while he was grieving the death of his father - but the school said it was not a good enough reason

For this weeks “Sunday News” I have decided to talk about a story, which I found on the main page of the Daily News. This story describes how a woman is being prosecuted by a council due to a low attendance of one of the sons whose father recently died in an accident

I found this story interesting and decided to express my own opinion about it, as personally I believe that the woman was put in a critical situation and it just shows how heartless and cruel some people can be just to get money out of others.
The council and school knew very well about the situation that the family was in, yet they still decided to place the mother in trouble just for their own good, and not considering the effect which, this can cause on the children who are now scared that “They will loose the mother too”.

Furthermore, the article also describes how the schools of the other children were supportive of the situation and did not make any problems about the children’s attendance.

In addition, I think that it is important that this story was placed as the biggest article on the main page of the Daily Mail website as it will catch the attention of the readers and may interest them enough into completing some kind of action which, may help the family, however, also to prevent another situation like this from happening in the future.

Gender Stereotypes In Media

In todays world, media plays a big role in our every day lives. It provides us with a range of different information by publishing them in the press, television, radio, books and the Internet.
Although, this is very positive, like everything it has some negatives to it and one of those negatives are stereotypes and more specifically gender stereotypes.

“Stereotypes are thoughts that can be associated about specific types of individuals, groups of people or even certain ways of doing things.”

One of the main, very often raised issues with gender stereotyping is the way in which, women are presented to the audience of the different media forms. It is very often described how in the modern times, women are starting to become victims to advertising as they are beginning to be used to help sell products by being shown in sexy outfits and therefore, attracting attention.

The above image is an example, which shows how women are used to attract the attention of the audience by being shown sexually.

This is an advert for a watch for men meaning that the exposed female is used to attract their attention

In addition, different media platforms also present a very stereotypical imagine of women where they are shown as young, slim and with no flaws. Also, encouraging young women and teenage girls to look like the ‘ideal girl’

Here we can see two front covers of completely different magazines. Both showing a similar idea of how a woman should look, with captions encouraging diets and weight loss.

These types of images then lead the audience into raising false ideas about the definition of ‘perfection’ and causes many young women and girls to go into thinking that they should do everything that they can in order to look just like the models. Furthermore, it also leads males into creating a false image of women in their mind and so many may begin to raise false interpretations of a natural real girl.

This issue is very serious as it can bring a lot of problems to women, how they think, feel and the way that they are treated. However, the media does not often see this issue as a problem due to the reason that it helps them to make a larger profit as many ladies will begin to purchase even more magazines and products just to make themselves look at least a bit more like the front cover models.

Exam re-marks - article review

“Examiners 'more generous' during remarks right after summer results”

This is a story, which, I have found in the education section of  “The Telegraph”

The article explains how the;

Markers are more generous when they re-mark A-level and GCSE papers right after the summer results because they “feel really bad” about penalising pupils”

I found this story interesting and I have decided to review on it as it has a clear link with me due to the reason that I have just completed my GCSEs and I am getting one of my exams re-marked meaning that this article will allow me to be able to find out more information about what the examiners are saying about the current situation that the students are in and what chances there are for the grades to change.

Personally, I think that this article has been placed in the news in order to encourage more young people to get their exams remarked as it speaks about the large chance of the grades going up. This will therefore, cause many teenagers who might have not done so good in their GCSEs or A-Levels to pay extra money in order to get those checked over again as this may allow them to do the things that they have previously planned such as a particular A-level course or attending university.
This will so, bring an advantage to the exam board and government as they will be getting more money from the rising number of students applying to them for a remarked exam paper.

Moreover, the idea that in the title of the article ‘more generous’ is placed in quotation marks in order to show the irony of the statement and so, makes an indirect indication that the way in which, the situation is explained by the board, might not actually have the whole truth.
