“THIS GIRL CAN”

This commercial is used as a campaign created in order to promote a healthy lifestyle for women.

The campaign unlike many, uses a positive representation of women by showing females who do not have the “model figure” which, the media wants everyone to think is perfect and sends out a clear message that we should all be proud of what we look like and who we are.

As for the audio, the advert uses mostly non-diegetic sounds, more precisely a popular song “Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliot. The use of this soundtrack makes the advert much more attracting and catchy and so will make sure to stay in the viewers mind as they will be able to straight away think of it when they hear the song on the radio.
In addition, the advert makes a very minimal use of diegetic sounds, by only using a 1-3 second pause in the soundtrack in order to make the video much more interesting by including the sound of people breathing and/or walking.

Moreover, for the visual technical codes, the advert uses a variety of different camera shots such as a long shot to show a woman running, mid shots used at the beginning of the video to show a woman walking as well as close ups to show how tired the character is. Additionally, a wide range of editing techniques such as slow motion and change of lighting to make the whole concept much more professional.

All of the technical codes, which have been used by the editors of the clip, help to make the whole campaign much more appealing and interesting for the audience to watch. Also, the idea of the whole video following a “catchy” storyline makes sure that it will stay in the mind of those who watched it and so will be able to send out the message which, it carries to them much better, making sure that they will be able to remember it.

  1. I like this post because for her examples, she used pictures for evidence which helped to back up her points.
To improve you can use captions for your pictures.

  2. Its good that you realised, that this ad is different to many. It does use positive representation of women. You've also mentioned the effect of having having a catchy song in the background and explained how the camera shows certain parts of the body- would have been better to explain why the camera focused on a specific thing, but still a very good post.

  3. I like the fact that your thoughts towards this campaign are positive and very detailed. I like how you were able to identify the different terminologies used within the videos such as the camera angles and audio. I also like the way you presented your analysis towards the campaign 'This girl can' and i also like your background, its very beautiful.

  4. Yes Sandra! Your analysis is really good and the ideas are really clever. You talked about loads of visual, technical and audio codes as well as the editing of the advert. You also backed up ever point with a good detailed explanation. To improve maybe try and talk a bit about representation of women in the advert. But it was still a really good post!

  5. The explanation of the non-diegetic sound and what effect the music has on the audience was good.
Good use of pictures to break up the writing and to give examples for your explanations.
To improve this perhaps go into more detail about the different visual codes that could be used for example talk about the lack of dialogue.

    Well Done

  6. Very good analysis of the advert, I like how straight away you stated that this advert is unlike any other advert that promotes women doing exercise. When you spoke about the music and song choice, you analysed it very well, mentioning the pause in the music and the effect that would have on the viewer. To improve you could talk about how the camera angles effect the viewer and the messages they portray but you did use screen shots to support your statements about the camera shots! Well done :)

  7. I think that their assessments are correct. Going forward talk about the colours used and why, the speed of the edits to match the pulsating rhythm of the accompanying Hip Hop track popular by Missy Elliott, which links well as she is known for being an independent outspoken woman. Mpstly explain why the Director / Editor / Cinematographer has chosen these specific shots. Well Done!
