The film is based loosely around events in December 1995 that culminated in the murders of three drug dealers in Rettendon, Essex, UK.

Essex Boys suggests…
•Essex as an offshoot of London (contains ‘New Towns’ for Londoners in the sixties), characterised by gangsters and drug deals gone wrong.
•Uses London gangster language (You better keep your mouth shut)
•Quotes from the Mirror (Tabloid) and Heat (Celebrity mag) suggests a common man interest.
•Use of images such as competing colours, cars, smashed windscreen, cut titles.
